CCS Zealand
Fifteen companies have joined forces in a new collaboration for CO₂ capture and storage in Eastern Denmark. We call it CCS Zealand. The purpose is to promote the large-scale implementation of CO₂ capture, transport, storage, and utilization, thereby supporting the decarbonization of Europe. The partnership will serve as a forum for gathering, establishing, and sharing experiences related to capturing, transporting, storing, and utilizing CO₂.
Eastern Denmark plays a crucial role in helping Denmark meet its climate goals. Many of the country’s major CO₂ emitters are located in this region, which also offers good opportunities for underground CO₂ storage and utilizing excess heat from these processes in district heating systems. Additionally, we can assist neighboring countries in managing their CO₂ emissions. This benefits the climate while keeping societal costs for achieving climate goals lower.
By creating CCS Zealand, we are collectively working to fulfill these ambitions. Sharing experiences across the value chain and collaborating on common knowledge will lead to better CCS solutions that benefit both businesses and society.
In CCS Zealand, we envision a future with a functional CO₂ market where stakeholders can buy and sell CO₂ with minimal barriers. We want to support this development. Like other markets, a CO₂ market requires shared-access infrastructure to operate efficiently. A key element of CCS Zealand’s vision is the establishment of CO₂ pipelines with sufficient capacity, as shared pipelines are more cost-effective than individual transport solutions using trucks or ships.
The companies behind the collaboration include AffaldPlus, ARC, ARGO, CarbonCuts, CTR, Evida, Gas Storage Denmark, HOFOR, CO2 Storage Kalundborg, Port of Kalundborg , Novo Nordisk Foundation, Novonesis, VEKS, Vestforbrænding, and Ørsted.
The collaboration spans district heating production, waste-to-energy, CO₂ transport, CO₂ storage, technology providers, and a philanthropic foundation.
